Boxing: Does Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Still Matter? Stuck
Posted on June 10, 2012 at 09:25 PM.

By now you've read about or witnessed the worst split decision in the history of boxing that took place Saturday night in the Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley fight.

Granted, there have been some horrible decisions before, but this one was exponentially worse than any of the head-scratchers that I can recall.

Earlier this month Yahoo! reported that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao had the contracts drawn up for the mega-fight. Even the smallest of details were outlined for the fight that was supposed to have taken place on March 13, 2010.

The Yahoo! article is very thorough and I encourage you to read it just to get an idea of hose close this dream fight came to being a reality.

Now Boxing fans have to deal with the aftermath of Pacquaio losing his WBO welterweight belt to Bradley.

The way in which Pacquaio lost doesn't do much to affect the prestige of his career. Everybody knew Pac-Man won the fight, except for the two judges that ultimately decided the outcome.

No matter what people say today about being turned off of boxing because of the sour taste the decision left in their mouths, they would still watch Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

There are many reasons why boxing has faded over the last decade, but that needs an entire column dedicated to the subject itself.

The fact is that the sport of boxing has two stars in which people will still buy Pay-Per-Views for. People may say they are done with boxing, but I can guarantee you those same people still want to see Mayweather fight Pacquiao.

They still matter.

IMO, i dont think that fight would matter anymore, as i last heard, "a loss is a loss", and unfortunatley Pacquaio lost and lost the title. It wouldnt warranty a huge paid day for either fighter right now.
It is very sad that decision(s) and scoring in boxing is very tainted, and will never recover fully from this lastest episode. i voved never to pay money for a boxing pay-per-view ever again after what i just witnessed over this weekend.
Boxing just went from okay to BAD in one hour!

cheers

No,when Pacquaio lost I knew it didn't matter no more. Thats just in my head even if they fight in the future It wouldn't feel the same to me before Manny's questionable loss.

Yes, for one simple reason. These two fan bases have been calling each other and the boxers every name under the son. The "shine" is off the fight, but Manny is still gonna draw, because fight fans know he didn't get beat, he "lost". Add to that no one plays the bad guy the way Floyd has since Razor Ramon in the early to mid 90's. Personally I think that Arum set this up to be a Bradley vs Manny Trilogy to allow him to rake in money over the next 12 months off these two fighters and not have to deal with Floyd and Golden Boy, but that is for another time.

I would still pay to see this fight.

Pac needs to fire Arum after last night. Go at Mayweather for one big bout... Promote it yourselves.

Of course it matters, these casual fans and the guys that only follow Pacquaio and Mayweather will forget all about this, if he had been dominated then it would have been a huge blow to this fight but he was 'robbed' if you want to call it that and so I don' think it makes a difference.

Also, the fact that you say this is the worst decision in the history of boxing says a lot really. I can think of some far worse decisions, even recently.

On the other hand this actually helps Manny. Scoot Christ from BadLeftHook puts in perfectly-

You know, if Manny Pacquiao was losing public support in any way -- the religious angle (it rubs some folks the wrong way when it's the focus of everything), the constant "he's a new man" talk, the simple fact that he hadn't looked like Unstoppable Monster Manny for a couple fights -- he gained some back last night, as the overwhelming majority of observers feel that Manny was jobbed. I'm one of them.
Listen, I watched the fight live, scored it 117-111 for Pacquiao. I watched it again on video this morning, nothing really changed. I even turned off the sound and watched it, which according to Hard Core Boxing Heads makes you a genius manly man who urinates scotch whisky and wears those stupid fedoras and all that. Manny Pacquiao won that fight. It wasn't Jim Lampley, it wasn't Harold Lederman, it wasn't the crowd. He won that fight. And he won it clearly.
So now it's, "Oh, poor Manny Pacquiao, getting the shaft like that. He really is a nice man. He just wants the fans to be happy." And if this has made Manny mad, everyone better watch out in November.

of course it still matters. Who really cares about Pacquiao's "loss"? Everybody knows he won, so who cares? I still want Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, Pac's win ... eh loss ... didn't change anything.

Boxing isn't dying, its not as popular as it once was but its not dying. Its already become a niche sport but boxing will never die.

One of the worst decisions ever! Has not been the first time a non-US fighter eventually got handicapped after fighting against an American. So much about the alleged neutrality of the judges in the US. Simply terrible...

Nope it doesn't matter because Bob Arum tried to trick us. I quote "I'll make a lot of money off the rematch, but this was outrageous" I mean that's what it comes down to, the rematch date being set right after the fight? C'mon son.Boxing isn't even exciting anymore, unless its Floyd fighting. No memorable knockouts and Boxers just hugging has made the sport bland. I'm switching to UFC because they always have exciting matches from what I hear. Boxing is dead.

While it is a fight I would love to see it has lost it's luster and not because of Pacs loss. I see both fighters as being past their prime and see signs of slippage on both. I think they waited one year too late to have this fight. I would have rather saw a prime Pac vs Floyd versus a past their prime Pac vs Floyd..and while the fight could still be enjoyable as Hearns vs Leonard II was its just not the be all end all fight I want to see at this point...

It matters because Pacquio already had 3 losses and people were hyping him up like he was the greatest pound for pound ever. Ignoring the purist who said he lost to Juan Marquez at least once and possibly twice. Pacquio is looked at as the only guy capable of beating the "Big bad wolf" in Mayweather. So until someone else steps in those shoes (possibly Bradley if he can beat up on Cotto or beat Pacquio again), Pacquio vs Mayweather will still matter.

It would have mattered 2 or 3 years ago, but at this point there's no way I'd pay for it. Manny is flat out getting old, and has not looked particularly impressive in his past few fights. Floyd is in the clink getting gangbanged for months to come, and there is already a rematch in November from Saturday's debacle, so it would be at least another year until this could possibly happen. What we have here is a massive fight/payday, which has been squandered by politics and bullsh*t. Goodbye forever boxing, can't say I'll really miss you since MMA is 10 times more entertaining anyway.
